GENERATIONS AND NATIONS
PART 4 : co-operation between generations and nations

Childhood memories

Summer house

A couple of years ago I was in a summer house in Tisvildeleje with my
grandfather, grandmother (the parents of my mother) and my little brother. It
was a really nice house with a big garden on one side of the house. The other side was covered with spruces.  There were 4 bedrooms, kitchen, dining room, wardrobe and terrace in the house. A lovely beach was situated only 25 m from the house - though there were groynes out in the water.

The first day we spent packing out and swimming in the sea. The weather was lovely with no wind and the sun shining from a cloudless sky. That night we went early to bed.

The second day we played petanque, badminton, croquet and then we watched tv. We bathed too of course. The weather was just as good as the day before. In the evening I watched football - Brøndby-X team, so that night I went rather late to bed.

The third day we had guests. 4 from the family, and then some of our friends. Again we played football, petanque, badminton, croquet and made a water fight. The weather hadn’t changed, or yes it had. There was one cloud in the sky. In the evening we grilled culotte, spare ribs and sausages.

On the fourth daythe situation had changed completly according to our weather god Voldborg. He had changed the weather, there was a strong wind, and the sky was very dark. This didn’t prevent us from taking a swim in the Danish sea - my grandfather -  my little brother and I. We couldn’t get very far out because it was high water. The waves were very very very very very very very very very very very big, and there was a very strong undercurrent. It was really super, but after a while my little brother wanted to go in, but he didn’t dare to go by himself, so my grandfather had to go with him.  I stayed in the water and waited for him to come out again,  but suddenly I stepped into a hole and lost my balance and then I was caught by the undercurrent. I began crying for help, but some time passed before my grandfather heard it, and during this short period I had already passed the groynes. He then hurried out to save me. I swam fast against the undercurrent, but it didn’t help much. When my grandfather had come out to me, it turned out that I could touch bottom, but then a big wave hit us, and we fell agains the groynes. My grandfather got some big scratches and cuts on his legs.  Nothing happened to me besides the shock.  I could hear my mother breathe a sigh of relief.
