| Egon’s father Vahur told:
A Story in BAM
It happened when I was in the army. I was driving down from a steep
mountain. But suddenly the car’s brakes didn’t work
anymore. I was lucky to get the third gear on but after that the clutch
didn’t work too. Then I turned off the engine. Then there
was a very fast and dangerous driving down the road. But there was
no time to think about death.
Battalion commander was sleeping in the car. His head shaked against
the window frame. He woke up and asked me: "Why
are you rushing?’’ When we finally stopped on a cliff he asked: " Why
didn't you stop the car?’’ I answered: "Brakes didn’t
work!’’
Battalion commander was frightened and he screamed: " We could have
been killed!’’ When I came out of the car I couldn’t
walk for a while.
And what is BAM? It's that notoriety railway in Siberia. A railway
from the lake Baikal to the river Amur. Egon's father served
in the army there when BAM was being built. |
