Dear friends, we hearty welcome you to our joint symposium “Guarding the Biosphere - foreign language as a carrier of scientific information’.For all those, who are not so familiar with the used abbreviations, we would like to explain it to you.
The three organisations carrying this conference are represented by:
Prof. Christian Ullrich and his representative Hans Peter Winkelmann for the INFU,Institut für Umweltschutz, University of Dortmund,
Christiane Weigelt representing BioNet and byKarl Sarnow for the ESP, European Schools Project, Germany.
INFU: The word INFU stands for Institut für Umweltschutz — Institute for Environmental Protection. It is hosted by the University of Dortmund. Prof. Christian Ullrich, the head of the institute, will tell you some details by himself.
ESP: The European Schools Project is a project linking schools in Europe, initiated by Henk Sligte from Amsterdam University. He will say some words about this project in short for those new to this project later on.
BioNet: This is an initiative connecting environmental projects in schools under consultation of universities, authorities, institutions and associations. BioNet-Teams overcome the limits of subjects and see their task to arrange between research and education. There is no president in this organisation. It is a group of competent experts, working together according to a principle we call BOTTOM-TO-TOP. The corresponding expertise is the benchmark for the position in the project. This position is neither rigid nor fixed.
This symposium had not become reality, if there was not the generous help from friends, colleagues, the city of Schwerte, represented by the mayor Mrs. Ursula Sobelat. VDBioI, Verband Deutscher Biologen, Landesverband Nordrhein-Westfalen, EUROWINGS-airport Dortmund, Digital Equipment Company München and the Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt, Osnabrück.
We are especially grateful to our host, the director of the catholic academy of Schwerte, Mr. Krems.
We do hope, this symposium will be a contribution to better understanding of mankind and our contribution to guarding the biosphere.
We now declare the symposium opened
